Two different TITAN models received major industry awards within the last two months. Announced at infoComm '08, the TITAN sx+ 500 received the Best Video Projection Product/High Lumen award on the basis of a readers' poll conducted by Rental & Staging magazine.

DP SHOWCASES NEW PRODUCTS, EXPANDED RESOURCES AND AN UNMATCHED COMMITMENT TO CREATING REVOLUTIONARY DISPLAY SOLUTIONS FOR THE HOME AT CEDIA '08

Digital Projection unveiled new products and innovative applications at this year's CEDIA Expo, September 4-7 in Denver, Colorado. With a large array of our powerful Home Cinema models on display, thousands of attendees were able to experience Digital Projection's extensive product lineup first-hand. A steady stream of dealers, integrators and end-users viewed Hollywood's favorite Home Cinema solutions in the DP booth throughout the four-day show.

Our exhibit displayed projectors from our TITAN, LIGHTNING and dVision 1080p platforms, along with demonstrations of our magnificent Reference 1080p series. Demonstrations ranged from the presentation of original 3D entertainment produced by Niles Creative Group to practical examples of how to integrate projection systems for residential venues beyond the theater.

Brand new products unveiled at CEDIA '08 included DP’s RP97, an awe-inspiring large-screen, small footprint, in-wall rear projection system featuring an extraordinarily bright and high contrast 97" screen. In a more secluded area of our booth, DP also demonstrated our prototype LED illuminated single chip projector featuring a triple LED illumination system with an expected life span of more than 60,000 hours!

Although DP’s LED projector launch is not slated until the end of 2009, the RP97 will be officially launched on our pricing in the next few weeks. You can read more about that impressive rear projection solution in the feature article below.

Brand New TITAN RP97 Launches at CEDIA '08


Ultra-Bright Rear Screen Projection System offers Giant, High Performance Image and Installation Simplicity for Ambient Light Venues Throughout the Home

At the request of elite Home Cinema dealers the world over, Digital Projection has launched a bold alternative to oversized plasma screens. The TITAN RP97, designed for use in media rooms, family rooms and other home venues with significant ambient light, portrays an extraordinary 97” image with the saturated colors, deep contrast and stellar dynamic range that have made DP’s projectors the reference standard for Home Cinema use. With the TITAN RP97, the impeccable imaging of DP's legendary projection systems can now be deployed in any venue in the home.

The TITAN RP97 pairs DPI's powerful and efficient TITAN 1080p-500 projector with an optically precise, Black Bead Fresnel screen to assure cinema quality imagery, even in high ambient light environments.

According to George Walter, Vice President of Home Cinema for DPI, “When used in rooms with very high ambient light, black levels are preserved and contrast ratios are exceptionally high. Unlike any other projection product, the size of the screen and the exquisite dynamics of the image enable the TITAN RP97 to deliver a cinema viewing experience in a non-theatrical environment.”

DP put the RP97 to the supreme ambient light test at CEDIA 2008 by exhibiting the system under a 575-watt theatrical spotlight. Attendees commented that standing under that spotlight was like looking at the sun through a window. Even under this extraordinary ambient light source, which was placing 60+ FtL of light on the screen, the RP97 rendered bright, high contrast and highly saturated imagery. Attendee feedback was resoundingly positive, with many remarking that the RP97 produced the brightest imagery they’d seen at the show.

Designed to integrate into new construction projects as well as retrofit into existing spaces, the RP97 can be installed in the equivalent space of a large coat closet, revealing only a dark matte 97” black screen that is flush with the wall. Assembly of the TITAN RP97 is straightforward and requires no wall mounting hardware. Installation is easily managed on site by two technicians.

Alford Media created a massive visual impact using six of their TITAN 700 fleet at a private corporate event in Dallas, Texas in July.

Four of the TITANS were double-stack using our new Rapid Rig frames from truss in the audience, projecting graphics onto 20ft wide screens with a 75 foot throw. The last pair of TITANS were double stacked and rigged backstage projecting graphics on a center stage screen with a short throw .7 lens.

The combination of the TITAN's incredible brightness and the extremely fast rigging and alignment using the Rapid Rig frame made for an excellent setup, show and strike.

Lens Shift and the Projector Sweet Spot

Lens shift, or image offset, can be defined as the ability to shift a projected image vertically or horizontally in order to accommodate specific installation challenges. In most installations, lens shift can be used to optimize image geometry and scaling performance by optically landing the image on the screen without having to tilt the projector and employ keystone correction. It can also be used to position the projector such that the average viewer is placed in the illumination sweet spot – an especially important consideration in rear screen and high gain front screen applications.

Within Digital Projection's current product lineup, the only projectors that do not offer lens shift are the iVision 30 series products. These projectors are designed to mount in a specific position with respect to the top or bottom of the screen.

With the benefit of lens shift, our other displays can be located within a much wider area of the screen. This area is usually defined as a percentage of the image (or screen) height or width. With lens shift centered, dVision, Mercury, TITAN, HIGHlite, LIGHTNING and Reference displays are designed to be installed on-axis with respect to the screen. The lens employed in the application defines the amount of total lens shift available, from that on-axis position.

Zoom lenses generally offer the most lens shift - up to 50% of the image height (vertical) and up to 25% of the image width (horizontal). Short throw fixed lenses generally offer more limited lens shift – approx 10% of the image height and little or no horizontal shift. Fixed short throw lenses are most often utilized for on–axis rear screen applications.

As an example, when using a typical zoom lens with a TITAN HD projector on a screen that is 60” high, the installer would have as much as 50% vertical lens shift (offset), or 30 inches of up and down image movement from the screen center. This allows the projector to be installed anywhere from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. Given a 16 x 9 aspect ratio, the same 60” high screen is nearly 107” wide. The same zoom lens would offer 10% of that screen width in horizontal lens shift (horizontal offset), or nearly 11 inches of image shift left and right.

It is important to remember, if both horizontal and vertical lens shift are employed, the total available lens shift in either dimension will normally be less than the maximum specified for the lens.

Although lens shift provides great flexibility in projector placement, be aware that in any installation, the goal should be to install the projector to assure maximum transfer of illumination from the projector to the average viewer position. This makes the most of screen gain and optimizes luminance uniformity, peak brightness, contrast and also minimizes hot spotting. Projector placement is especially critical in rear-screen applications, as well as in front screen applications where high gain screens are utilized.
