infoComm 2006:
A Huge Success!

INFOCOMM 06 is now in the history books, but looking back, we are pleased to report it was a very strong show for DP.  Here is a list of a few of our important achievements and happenings in Orlando:

 On the product side:

  • DP launched a total of 11 new precision displays, including:
    • 6 new TITAN projectors class leading in performance and value, in native resolutions from XGA to 1080p!
    • 4 new LIGHTNING projectors including some with brightness in excess of 22,000 lumens, in both native sx+ and native 1080p/2048 resolution!
    • 1 new HIGHlite projector 14,000 lumens and able to support native 1080p/2048 resolution at a price that is almost irresistible
  • DP utilized 100% DVI and fiber optic signal distribution for the 20 sources and 18 displays operating in our booth.  All of the hardware in our distribution path came straight from DP's lineup of Digital Signal Distribution Accessories.  Source signals were pristine and the imagery was flawless.
  • DP employed the exclusive P7 colorimetry and Xenon color mode capability of our new TITAN sx+ 500 projectors, and created an absolute match in color performance between their Metal Halide-based illumination and the Xenon-based illumination of our LIGHTNING series.  Everyone said it could not be done, but seeing is believing!

  On the hospitality side:

  • We hosted hundreds of dealers, stagers, consultants and end users in our booth for full product line tours and demonstrations.  With all the activity in our booth, it was absolutely the busiest INFOCOMM in DP's history
  • DP held our much anticipated ALL-IN Poker Tournament, marking the pinnacle of our year-long sales promotion.  Nearly 30 players representing millions of dollars of DP sales, vied for more than $45,000 in cash and prizes, with their co-workers and families cheering them on.  It was a major event and left all the winners and everyone at DP with a big smile.  You can see the All-IN wrap-up article in this newsletter for a rundown of the 7 winners.
  • We sponsored TI's BIG 10 BASH, and using our LIGHTNING displays, provided the IMAG for Pat Benatar's energized performance.  We don't think she will mind us saying, her band sounded great and she sure looked good on the brilliantly illuminated 16' x 9' screens flanking the stage.

Our thanks to everyone who invested time with us at the show, and helped make INFOCOMM 06 such a great event for DP.  We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

DP Introduces First 3-chip 1080p Platform

At infoComm in June, Digital Projection introduced the highly anticipated TITAN 1080p-500 - marking DPI's first use of the new .98" 1920 x 1080 DarkChip DMD from Texas Instruments in a 3-chip configuration

Carefully engineered to capitalize on every benefit of the 1920 x 1080 DLPTechnology, DPI engineers have incorporated a vast array of video processing capabilities, as well as extensive source compatibility through seven user selectable inputs. The TITAN 1080p-500 and sx+ 500 both feature enhanced 7 point color correction, a xenon color mode with user selectable yellow notch filter, and class leading de-interlacing of HD and SD sources using auto 3:2 and 2:2 extraction. Equipped with twin 250 watt lamps, the projector is capable of delivering 6,000 ANSI lumens and up to 2000:1 contrast.

"All You Need is...28 DPI Projectors!"

The newest show to hit the Las Vegas Mirage Hotel & Casino may be all about the music of The Beatles, but the projection is all about DPI! Under the direction of Canadian DPI customer SoloTech, the show features 23 HIGHlite 12000Dsx+ and 5 LIGHTNING 30sx+ projectors from Digital Projection.

Arranged in double-stack configurations, the HIGHlite 12000Dsx+ projectors display video content on two huge 22,000 square foot panoramic screens. Additionally, the LIGHTNING 30sx+ projectors are utilized for four 832 square foot, semi-transparent screens which move about the stage.

In one of the first public uses of HIGHlite 12000Dsx+'s in the dynamic V-Base projector yoke from Brother, Brother & Sons, four projector/yoke systems are employed to project video content, while tracking moving screens with precise accuracy.

Tech Tip: The Benefits of Enhanced Seven Point Color Correction

Overview

To date, color correction on display devices has been predominantly limited to white point adjustment which is a one Point color adjustment. While there are controls for each primary color (R,G,B) at the white and black ends of the range (usually called Contrast and Brightness) these only affect the white point and have no effect on the primary colors themselves. All these controls do is vary the contribution (saturation) each color makes to form white.

The next level in color correction would not only allow for adjustments of this white point, but also each of the primary colors. This would be Four Point Color correction. Even better would be to also adjust the secondary colors (Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow). This is now possible with Digital Projection’s Enhanced Seven Point Color feature found in the TITAN and LIGHTNING series projectors.

The ability to have full control over the primary and secondary colors as well as the white point enables complete control over the range of colors a projector can display. It is well know that for different makes of film the range of colors is different. Some film may have deeper and more saturated reds and others may not. In the electronic world, these differences are not restricted by chemicals or the development process.

Enhanced Seven Point Color now makes it possible to fine tune and accurately reproduce a desired range of colors across any source.

Summary of key features

  • Correction of 7 color points (Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and White) - not just white
  • Factory set color balance for neutral environment (no color meter required)
  • Projectors color matched from factory – factory ready for tiling
  • Three fixed Color gamut’s included for – Film, Video and Graphic applications
  • Two downloadable User Color gamut’s available
  • Application for Color gamut entry served from projector web-server.
  • Additional Color gamut’s can be stored on external computer for later download
  • User entry of installation color balance for absolute color (correcting for any slight color casts from warning signs etc). Requires Spectrophotometer – color meter.

Benefits

Artistic look
As described in the overview above this allows a user to precisely set a color gamut, which creates a look and feel that can be repeated on multiple TITAN or LIGHTNING displays, and in multiple locations.

Tiling
In applications where multiple projectors must be used, slight tolerance differences can occur between projectors. Until now only the white shading could be balanced to match adjacent projectors. This has tended to be an intuitive process as the measuring equipment commonly used is not precise enough to make even this single point color adjustment an easy one. Enhanced Seven Point Color allows the installer to precisely match not only the white but also the primary colors of the projectors to form one complete even shade of color across each of the segments of the tiled image.

Simulation
Frequently in simulation, the display of a specific color (i.e. “Coca-Cola Red”) is critical. Enhanced Seven Point Color enables this precise color to be established using the correct “Target” color setting.
