By now you've likely heard the impressive attendance and exhibitor numbers from the 2012 ISE expo in Amsterdam. Digital Projection Limited, headquartered in Manchester, UK, managed and designed a huge exhibit at this year's expo, displaying key projectors from both the Commercial AV and Home Cinema product lines.

Porsche fans are some of the most exuberant auto enthusiasts in the world. With this is mind, how do you launch a new Porsche model in a way that lives up to the expectations of the enthusiast community? An Atlanta-based Porsche dealership and Audio Automation & Theater, Inc. (AAT), an Atlanta-based luxury AV integrator, unveiled the solution.

Projection solutions add functionality to nearly any venue, by offering image sizes that are much larger than can be achieved with a flat panel display. For projectors to be an effective, high contrast solution in media rooms, presentation rooms and other mid to high ambient light venues, striking a perfect balance between projector lumens and screen performance is vital. In simple terms, employing front or rear projection screens that preserve image black level is a critical factor for projection success in ambient light environments. Black level (or contrast enhancing) screen materials are available from a number of leading screen manufacturers.

Per research gathered by EH Publishing's CE Pro: The average price of an installation in the custom market in 2007 was $29,910. Today, it sits at $13,500, a 55 percent drop over four years.

100 business leaders across various disciplines of the AV industry, including integrators, distributors, manufacturers, consultants and independent programmers came together to exchange ideas during the recent InfoComm 100 event in Portland, Oregon. Digital Projection, D-BOX, Leon Speakers, Stewart Filmscreen and ADA recently entertained almost 140 top-level integrators at the 2011 CE Pro 100 Summit in Miami, Florida.

2011 has been an incredible year of growth for DP, from the huge headquarters expansion to the many new faces joining our team. From a products perspective, 2011 has seen an unequaled expanse of new models, as well as new capabilities within existing product lines. Here's a short summary of the key product launches of 2011.

This year's CEDIA Expo marked a new mileston for DP, as our 60' x 60' CEDIA exhibit was the largest in Digital Projection's history. Years ahead of the competition in developing 3D, LED and high-lumen precision projectors, DP introduced new advanced 2D and 3D displays in a variety of price points. The "Best New Product" Finalist dVision 35-1080p 3D attracted plenty of attention, winning both a CE Pro "BEST" award and a Custom Retailer Excite! award at the show. The TITAN Quad 3D introduced unprecedented brightness (at 16,000 lumens!) to audiences looking for the ultimate immersive 3D experience. All this and more are covered in detail below.

CEDIA 2011 is just 3 weeks away! After months of designing and planning, DP's CEDIA exhibit is now "in production," with DP team members and resources in all corners of the world working to bring it all together.

Our CEDIA 2011 exhibit will be another milestone production - expected to fill 3 semi trucks full of gear. Once on site, nearly 25 tons of hardware will be deployed to create an expansive, 3600 square foot projection show room, featuring 14 distinct DP models displayed in galleries and formal theaters.

Three packed semi trucks left DP's doc last Wednesday, destined for Orlando and loaded with the latest revolutions in large screen display technology. Precious cargo for certain, and we were pleased to know that our 55,000 lb shipment was received at the Orlando convention center on Thursday morning. By the time you read this newsletter, all of our gear will have been off-loaded, and our engineering team well on their way to creating the Tradeshow Magic that characterizes Digital Projection's exhibits.

InfoComm 2011 is just around the corner and DP has huge news to share. Although we are compelled to save the specific details of our new product announcements until just before the show, we want to give you a top level glimpse right now.

We can hardly believe it, but CEDIA is less than a week away. DP’s trucks just pulled away from our dock last night, and our lead team is already on show site, commencing the construction of our 3000 square foot exhibit. Plenty of work to be done, but we are ready for the challenge!

Our exhibit on the show floor will encompass an impressive Reception Lobby, with no less than 8 TITAN 1080p projectors presenting dramatic welcome imagery on, among other things, a sweeping 40’ SuperNova Infinity screen from DNP. These 8 projectors will comprise 16 million pixels, 80,000 lumens and billions of colors, so as you can imagine, you won’t see anything like DP’s reception presentation anywhere else on the show floor.

As we publish this newsletter, DPI’s booth is being constructed at the Las Vegas convention center, in preparation for InfoComm 2010. In total, we have 3 semi-trailers loaded with all the makings for a spectacular presentation of Digital Projection’s latest and most powerful displays.

As we approach announcing formal pricing and first shipments of our all new HIGHlite Cine platform, a few of our customers have asked how this value-priced 3-chip DLP product compares with our revered TITAN product line. That is actually a great question, as the HIGHlite Cine has been engineered to compliment the TITAN by making 3-chip DLP performance available to customers with smaller budgets.

DP is proud to announce the Fusion platform. DP’s FUSION MD and FUSION 3D processors were created to specifically provide the most advanced multi channel warp and blend for these critical real-time applications. The advanced architecture of the FUSION processors results in video latency that equates to just a few lines of a single video frame - basically, near-zero latency.

Can you briefly explain what 3D video is and how it differs from the traditional video that we're use to seeing in our homes?
3D Video provides an immersive viewing experience, whereby the image content is actually perceived by the viewer as a true 3 dimensional image. 3D video systems can be designed using a variety of technological approaches, but in all cases, the actual content to be displayed is captured (or rendered) and subsequently displayed in two synchronous perspectives – one replicating what our left eyes would see, and the other replicating what our right eyes would see, if the subject material was actually being viewed in the real world. Just as when viewing the real world, the two slightly different left eye and right eye perspectives, are integrated by our brains to create depth perception.

Given the extensive 3D projection lineup offered by DP, it is not surprising that we have some serious 3D enthusiasts... and critics here. That being the case, and with the holiday season upon us, a number of our 3D golden eyes jumped at the opportunity to see A Christmas Carol, Disney’s latest 3D release. This review presents our take on the 3D animated remake of this holiday classic.

Creating a Scalable Display Solution Using DP's TITAN Series and Optional RapidRig™ Mechanics

Simple. Fast. Precise.
The demands of today's large-venue events call for projector rigging and stacking to be simple, fast and precise. DP's RapidRig™ system, which includes accurate pitch, roll and yaw adjustments for each projector, can be added as an option to all TITAN models.

WUXGA and Where it Fits

Digital Projection has introduced a number of new WUXGA projectors over the past few months and will continue to develop products around this relatively new DLP chipset. The "Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array" (WUXGA) is a 16x10 aspect ratio with a display resolution of 1920x1200 pixels.

Resolutions Overview

Here are the most commonly used display resolutions and aspect ratios, plus how they're typically used.

1280 x 720 (720p - 16 x 9 or 1.78:1): Great for High Definition Video applications.

1400 x 1050 (SX+ - 4 x 3 or 1.33:1): Predominantly a computer resolution. Also excellent for edge blending as the 4 x 3 aspect ratio maximizes screen height.

Lens Shift and the Projector Sweet Spot

Lens shift, or image offset, can be defined as the ability to shift a projected image vertically or horizontally in order to accommodate specific installation challenges. In most installations, lens shift can be used to optimize image geometry and scaling performance by optically landing the image on the screen without having to tilt the projector and employ keystone correction. It can also be used to position the projector such that the average viewer is placed in the illumination sweet spot – an especially important consideration in rear screen and high gain front screen applications.
