infoComm Wrap-Up

infoComm 2005 ended with great success as Digital Projection concluded our demonstrations in both the main hall and large venue gallery. Notable events of the show included DP's introduction of the new TITAN 6000sx+ projector which was well received as our newest compact Pro series projector.

dVision Spotlight

Digital Projection has begun shipping its latest widescreen projector for both commercial and home cinema applications, the dVision HD. The new projector is by far the most feature-rich single-chip product the industry has ever seen. Weighing in at just over 35 lbs and boasting an impressive 1280 X 720 native resolution, this dual lamp projector is capable of producing over 2500 lumens and a contrast ratio up to 6000:1.

The real beauty however, lies in the 6 unique, high performance lens options. The lens suite starts with a fixed lens at .87:1 and from there, covers the entire range up to over 7:1 with 5 high performance zoom lenses. Each lens has a unique bayonet mount which requires no tools for installation or removal. The extra wide aperture of each lens results in the most extensive range of lens shift of any projector in its class. You can mount the dVision HD well above or below the screen, and all the way from one screen edge to the other! Even more unique is the adjustable iris, which allows the installer to “step down” the aperture of the lens to fine tune screen foot-lamberts and create CRT-like black levels. No doubt, features like this make the dVision HD one of the most flexible and powerful single-chip DLP projectors for your applications.

The number of venues for wide aspect ratio projectors increases daily, as seen by the recent use of a fleet of dVision HD’s by Texas Instruments at the their recent infoComm party and Huey Lewis and the News concert. This major event, billed by TI as “The Party that Rocks”, was held at the Palm Hotel in Las Vegas and more than 1800 DLP enthusiasts attended. To enhance the guests’ view of the show, 5 dVision HD's served-up I-Mag of the live performance, illuminating HD screens in key locations around the venue. The dVision HD’s bright and clear images gave virtually every attendee a front row seat at the concert as Huey Lewis and the News played song after song from their collection of classic hits.

Although residential applications create the biggest demand for wide screen projectors, new and exciting applications in commercial and entertainment venues pop-up every day. Digital Projection is proud to offer products like the dVision HD as a solution for every widescreen application!

Dealer Spotlight

Audio Automation & Theater opens a new Showroom!

Atlanta based Audio Automation and Theater has moved to a new location, opening an even more exciting showroom. Kevin Collins, president of Audio Automation and Theater has always been a believer in showing his clients the amazing performance of the DP product range. His previous showroom provided constant demonstrations of Digital Projection’s HIGHlite Gold HC, and the iVision HD projectors. Visitors to Atlanta’s trendy Buckhead area could walk by AA&T’s first showroom and be treated to a dramatic 12’ wide HD image generated by the HIGHlite Gold, even well after the store had closed.

Audio Automation’s new store is just a block away from their original location, and provides customers an even better opportunity to view DP’s precision home cinema displays as Kevin has added a Mercury HD to his demo theater lineup. The Mercury brings the total number of Digital Projection products on display to 3, the most of any DP Elite Home Cinema Dealer. Everyone at Digital Projection is excited about our local partner’s success and dedication to the DP product line. We wish you all the best Kevin!

TECH TIPS

One Lamp or Two?

Digital Projection’s Mercury, TITAN and dVision displays are offered in dual-lamp configurations. Is the two-lamp design always the best choice? The answer lies in the details of the application.

A single lamp projector design is capable of producing less scatter light and thus, better black levels and contrast ratio. A two-lamp design provides considerably more light output as well as built in redundancy or, the potential for double the lamp life. If there is some ambient light in the venue, the slightly elevated black levels of the two-lamp design will likely not be noticed, but the increased environmental dynamic range produced by the higher lumen power will be a welcome addition. Also, the second lamp provides a redundant light source if one lamp should go down. Although a dual-lamp projector running with just one lamp will not produce full light output, a reduced brightness picture is almost always better than no picture at all.

Some dual-lamp designs, like the one employed in DP’s dVision products, allow the user to change one lamp while the projector and primary lamp are still in operation. This is very important for 24/7 applications where limiting downtime is a must.

So the next time you are choosing a projector for your application, consider the advantages of a two-lamp design. Quite often, two lamps are better than one!
