Thank You For a Great 2008 & Here's to the Arrival of 2009!
As we watch the close of 2008 approaching fast, we wanted to take a moment to thank all of our dealers, customers and friends for everything you have done to help Digital Projection make 2008 one of the biggest years in our history.
Although a variety of challenges restrained much of the economy at large - especially during the 2nd half of the year - DP was still able to realize strong growth in 2008. While it can be said that our robust product line, committed customer service and improved product availability helped support that growth, everyone at DPI knows the majority of the credit goes to the dealers, consultants and system designers who trusted us with their display projects. Thank you for sharing your opportunities with us!
Looking ahead to 2009, DP has prepared some very interesting new projection solutions, along with key enhancements to current products. In some cases the new products and capabilities will strengthen our offerings for the Commercial AV and Home Cinema markets that we already consider core to our business. In other cases our new announcements will be quite revolutionary - and likely to serve as powerful vehicles for DP and our dealers to provide solutions for a variety of new, high growth vertical markets. You can expect to see the first announcements in Q1.
With all of our recent success and DP's potential for continued strong growth in 2009, we want you to know that we remain focused on the core principles that have guided our company since we shipped our first projector nearly 12 years ago. Thus, we hereby renew our commitment to pursue technological innovation and unequalled product performance and value - all supported by unmatched customer services and straightforward business integrity.
Thanks for being a great partner in 2008, and here's to the coming of another GREAT year as we work together to bring DP's precision displays to the world's most important events and venues!

Dollywood's Polar Express Creates "4-D" Experience
Two Digital Projection LIGHTNING 45 HD-3D Projectors are Bringing the Polar Express Holiday Experience to Life in a Dazzling "4-D" Display
The 3D projection is so realistic we've had guests take off their 3D glasses thinking that the snow in the Polar Express 4D experience was being "blown into" the theater.
- Pete Owens, Dollywood Public Relations Manager
Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas celebration, which was named the best theme park Christmas event in the nation during the 2008 Golden Ticket Awards, is creating holiday magic this season with the debut of their Polar Express 4-D Experience. As their first production in the newly upgraded theater, the Polar Express 4-D Experience has seen both unprecedented ticket demand and raving reviews from the viewing audience.
"We're calling it 4-D because it combines the 3-D movie with motion seats and smells and a lot of other features that make this a really amazing addition to our Christmas celebration," Dollywood Public Relations Manager Pete Owens says. "We spent about $1 million to basically gut the screen area and build a new, rounded screen plus install the best projection equipment in the industry."
In anticipation of presenting the future of digital cinema, the facility recently upgraded to a state-of-the-art 4D simulation theater. Industry veterans Julian Angus and Shane Nichols served as consultants during the theater's technological upgrades. After comparing the image quality of the top projection manufacturers on the market, the two Digital Projection LIGHTNING 45 HD-3D projectors were selected because of their superb image quality and immersive 3D projection abilities. "We've heard from people at parks all over the place and they're telling us there's no better 3-D in the world," Dollywood Construction Manager Mike Teske says. "That's not just us saying that."

Alan Brawn Publishes Results of Projector Efficiency Research
Industry Veteran Alan C. Brawn (CTS, ISF, ISF-C, DSCE)
recently completed an industry efficiency survey for large venue projectors, and the findings echo the initial research DP conducted earlier in the year.
Below is an excerpt from Mr. Brawn's findings. You can read the full article by clicking here (pdf): Less Energy Consumption a Feature and Real Benefit by Alan Brawn
"While energy consumption should be of concern for every niche of the audio visual industry, nowhere is it more relevant than in displays. We are seeing some progress in energy consumption from the flat panel display manufacturers, but I had not heard a great deal from the projector side of the house. Being armed with natural curiosity I began to delve into the issue with several projector manufacturers. Frankly, I was surprised at what I discovered, especially at the high brightness end of the market. "

dVision 1080p Projectors Adopt VIDI Technology
DVision 1080P projectors will now begin utilizing Philips' exciting VIDI technology. VIDI is a Philips innovation developed in close cooperation with Texas Instruments in order to optimize the image performance of DLP-based projectors for both video and data applications. VIDI electronics activate the UHP lamp by way of a two-pulse system: one brilliant pulse and one dark pulse. The dark pulse enhances contrast, providing a smoother more vivid image, while the brilliant pulse boosts brightness by up to 25% to 30%. The brilliant pulse ensures there is a noticeable increase in brightness on the projection screen.
The Texas Instruments - Philips partnership in VIDI technology engineering allows the projector to pulse an individual color, or mix of colors by synchronizing the pulsing of the lamp with the cycling of the projector's the color wheel. For example, if you want more red, you can choose to "boost" the lamp output (pulse the lamp output) during the red interval of the color wheel. Thus, red illumination energy can be 25-30% brighter without affecting the overall demands on the lamp or lamp life. By creating a "dark" pulse, grey scale can be improved by up to 2 bits, along with an increase in contrast ratio and a reduction of dither noise by as much as 75%.
Different pulse combinations can be created to optimize projector performance for specific applications. VIDI technology allows color wheel-based projection systems, like DP's iVision and dVision series, to improve performance and flexibility without negatively affecting projector thermal output, efficiency or lamp life.
Our dVision 1080p-XB and XL projectors are currently available with VIDI technology. The dVision 1080p-XC will include VIDI technology in late March, 2009.
